Radarsat-2

Radarsat satellite imagery

New generation Radarsat-2 satellite engineered by CSA Canadian Space Agency and MDA (MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.) was launched in December 2007 from Baikonur Cosmodrome into sun-synchronous orbit of 798 km altitude and 98.6° declination with circuit of 100.7 minutes. Radarsat-2 is fitted with synthetic aperture side-viewing radar, providing unique swath width modification and spatial resolution, as well as Radarsat-1. The radar images the Earth in the Ñ-band with 5.6 cm wavelength and polarization modification (HH, VH, HV, VV),  in 10 - 60° angular range. Active orbit lifetime is 7 years at least. 3 m spatial resolution in 20 m swath width is a maximum in Ultra-Fine mode.

Radarsat-2 satellite imagery applications

  • Creation and refreshing of topographical maps and special plans up to 1:25 000 scale
  • DEM and DSM high resolution creation (up to 3-6 meters height accuracy)
  • All-weather survey of natural and anthropogenic catastrophes.
  • Ice-flow evaluation and water storage estimation.
  • Water area monitoring (oil pollution extension, flood tides, vessel allocation, ice-flow environment, etc.)
  • Crop mapping, detection of the plantings condition, precision farming.
  • Mapping growing stock, remote identifying species composition of stand, monitoring forest state and devastation.
