SPOT-5 satellite imagery

SPOT-5 was launched from the Kourou Cosmodrome on May 3, 2002 in sun-synchronous orbit at the height of 822 km aboard Arian-42Р missile carrier. SpotImage Company (France) is an operator of the satellite. SPOT-5 is equipped with high precision stereoscopy detector SPOT-DEM acquiring stereopairs used for global relief modeling perception and elevation plotting. Also it is fitted with 2 high resolution cameras which enable to acquire black-and-white imagery of 5 m spatial resolution (up to 2.5 m in SuperMode process) and color imagery with 10 m resolution.

Besides, SPOT5 is fitted with VEGETATION 2 camera enabling to acquire daily images of the whole earth surface with 1 km resolution. Estimated period in orbit is 5 years at least.

SPOT-5 satellite imagery applications

  • Creation and refreshing of topographical maps and special plans up to 1:25000 scale.
  • DEM creation up to 5-10 meters height accuracy.
  • Assessing and estimating of drill site and transportation infrastructure facilities.
  • Environmental survey of the petroleum and other minerals sites, refining and transportation places.
  • Refreshing of the topographical backdrops to other layers of mapping for the generation of metropolitan and constituent entities of the Federation region planning layouts.
  • Realization of forest inventory and organization. Instant forest use control and strategic monitoring of the forest health.
  • Crop inventory, crop environment monitoring and its contamination, detection of the fragile and pests plants, yield forecasting.
  • Monitoring and forecasting of such impacts as: bogginess and desertification, salinification, karsts, erosion, forest and grass fires, flooding etc.
